Breathe

Jesus said to [Martha], “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
“Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.” John 11:25-27 NIV

God

  1. is the resurrection. Yesterday I was reminded of how the righteousness that brings life is God’s righteousness and not what can be manufactured by the law or by people following the law. I am also reminded that God’s righteousness brings life; it doesn’t condemn to death. “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” John 3:17 NIV. God’s righteousness saves; it does not condemn. It is the righteousness of the Pharisees, that of religion, that condemns. Romans 2 shows how fruitless such righteousness is.
  2. is life. God creates. God re-creates. God gives life. Spirit of life that gives life. I am grateful to have life!

Therefore I….

  1. have been raised to life. The Spirit of God lives in me, raising me to life. I was dead; I am alive. Anything in my physical being that still looks, speaks, or acts like death will be raised to life.
  2. breathe. I am so grateful to breathe!

The Spirit gives life

But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. and if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you. Romans 8:10-11 NIV

God

  1. I love the way the Trinity of God interacts in these verses. The Spirit gives life; the Spirit is the Spirit of the Father, who raised Christ from the dead. Three at once bringing life. The dance of the Trinity causing us to dance with God.
  2. God lives in his/her people. That is really incredible. It’s something I have known all my life and not really had sink in.
  3. The Spirit of God gives life because of righteousness. Not the righteousness of people but the righteousness of God. God’s righteousness brings life to the dead, the sinful, to all those that the Law could not save.

Therefore I….

  1. I have the power of God living in me. I have the most powerful force of life in the universe present in my being. Right now. At this moment. As I breathe, God lives in me.
  2. I am invited to dance with God. I move with the Trinity. I live with them, and they in me. “On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.” John 14:20 NIV. Is this the day that I will realize how in God I am and how in me God is?
  3. I don’t have to try to produce my own righteousness. It is God’s righteousness that raises me from the dead and gives me life. The law can’t do that. My own effort can’t do that. Only God’s righteousness can do that. Praise God!

Limitless power

For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without limit. The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them. John 3:34-36 NIV

God…

  1. trusts the Son.
  2. shares his/her power.
  3. gives the Spirit with no boundaries on how much can be given.
  4. The wrath of God continues to operate in the lives of those who reject the Son whom God has sent.

Therefore I…

  1. can enjoy eternal life. I get to believe in Jesus, the Son of God, and receive the blessing of the fruit of that choice: eternal life. “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” John 17:3 NIV.
  2. can receive the Holy Spirit with no limit to the amount of the Spirit of God that can be given to me. This is incredibly appealing to me, but also very intimidating when I think of the limitless power of God that is meant to flow through me. God, help me invite you to flow through me in limitless abundance! “On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, ‘Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.’ By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive.” John 7:37-39 NIV
  3. has access to the power of God. That is crazy awesome and beyond what I could ever dream of or aspire to. “”Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” Matthew 18:18 NIV. People, God has given his/her power to his/her people. Let’s use it!

In glory

“Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.” John 17:24 NIV

God…

  1. Jesus wants me to see his glory. I really love that. He is not wanting to hide himself from me. He wants to reveal his glory to me in all its splendor. He is not timid or shy or pretend modest. What do they call that? False humility. That’s it! Jesus doesn’t have false humility! Hurray!
  2. Jesus wants to be with me. Isn’t that cool? He wants all of us to be with him. That’s worth celebrating!
  3. Jesus’ glory was already before the creation of the world. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. That power that rose him from the dead and that purity that made it possible for God to manifest his power through him to save us.

Therefore I…

  1. I get to see God’s glory! That is pretty incredible.
  2. Jesus wants my company! Isn’t that cool? I used to feel pretty lonely and wonder if anyone wanted my company. I was raised quite far out of mainstream American culture. When I became a part of the more mainstream culture, I wondered if people wanted me to be a part of them. Jesus wants me to be in the heavenly realms with him. That’s a nice place to be wanted.
  3. I was in Christ before the beginning of the world. God knew me then also. I have been loved outside of time and in time. That’s cool.

God calls, redeems, saves

But now, this is what the LORD says – he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk though the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior;” Isaiah 43:1-3 NIV

God…

  1. calls his/her own people by name. Isn’t that a wonderful thing? Yes, I know this passage was written about the Israelites thousands of years ago, but Christian theology as taught by the Apostle Paul believes that we are Abraham’s children because we are included in Christ. That makes me part of the people addressed in this passage. Isn’t that wonderful?
  2. redeems his/her own people who are disobedient and have destroyed their lives.
  3. saves his/her own people from deadly circumstances. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

Therefore I…

  1. am called by name by the most powerful force in the universe. You know this force is swirling around me right now. This force is in this room with me. Better yet, this force is in me, empowering me, upholding me, giving me lasting strength, healing me, loving me, enjoying me. How incredible is that?
  2. redeemed from all my mistakes! I am real grateful for that. You know every now and then I do a pretty good job of destroying my life and the lives of others, but God has a way of really turning things around. I am really grateful for that! I get to choose life! That is incredible.
  3. saved from death. I get to walk on water. I get to live through the fiery furnace. I can hear the Hallelujah Chorus in my heart right now. Victory in Jesus! my Savior forever!

I am richly blessed by God

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. Ephesians 1:3-4 NIV

God….

  1. blesses us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing.
  2. planned on us being in Christ before the Creation of the world.
  3. wanted us to be holy and blameless according to God’s standards.
  4. made a way for us to meet God’s standards.

Therefore I…

  1. am blessed in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing. Isn’t it incredibly amazing that I exist in the heavenly realms? I am in two realms: the one we are very aware of and the the one that is unseen but ultimately so much more powerful and influential than what can be seen. And not only that, I don’t just exist in the heavenly realms; but every spiritual blessing that is there has been given to me!
  2. have everything I need. God planned for my provision before the world was even created. Isn’t that amazing? 2020, 2021, or whatever year it might be, God has given me everything imaginable. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness… you name it, God has given it to me beyond how I can even imagine it existing.
  3. am holy and blameless. When God looks at me, he sees holiness and innocence. Isn’t that amazing?
  4. am a recipient of God’s grace. I am so grateful that Jesus Christ made a way for me to live forever.

I was born for 2020 and 2021!

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:8-10 NIV

God…

  1. saves us by his/her grace.
  2. doesn’t charge us for our salvation.
  3. knows the future and prepares for it.
  4. created us in Christ Jesus.

Therefore I…

  1. am saved by grace! I am so grateful that I can be saved. So many times in the evangelical world, “salvation” is thought of in terms of heaven versus hell in the after-life, but God does a whole lot more saving than that! God’s grace transforms and redeems my life right now.
  2. get to get a present from God. It’s free. Do you ever have to pay for a gift? I don’t think so!
  3. am prepared for the future and the present. I never have to fear. Yes! I was made for 2020 and 2021 and the next day too!
  4. have been created in Christ and re-created in Christ for this very moment in history! I was born and re-born for this! Hurray!!!!

I am protected by God’s life

I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me – just as the Father knows me and I know the Father – and I lay down my life for the sheep. John 10:14-15 NIV

God

  1. The persons of the Trinity know each other fully. What is interesting is that Jesus said the Father knows some things that he doesn’t – like when the end comes. Isn’t that interesting? One can know someone fully without knowing everything that they know.
  2. God, manifested as Jesus, is a good leader and protector. He is the good shepherd. He protects, provides, leads.
  3. God is sacrificial. Jesus dies for people. It’s an amazing picture to think of a person that is willing to die for an animal. It is even more amazing to consider a God who is willing to die for a person.

Me

  1. I am fully known by Jesus. He knows me and loves me.
  2. I am protected by the life of God. God died that I might live. Jesus protected me from Satan with his own life. Isn’t that incredible?
  3. I am very well led and provided for. The one who knows everything, who gives everything life, is the one who brings me my provision. I love that God’s provision for me is so complete and easy. Hurray!

God gives, reveals, opens

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Mathew 7:7-8 NIV

God…

  1. gives.
  2. is found.
  3. opens doors of opportunity. Isn’t it amazing? The most powerful force of good in the universe is generous with the goodness he/she possesses! Isn’t that incredible? I find it very incredible. God gives, reveals (is found), and opens opportunities for us everyday all day long. What a blessing!

Therefore I…

  1. receive.
  2. discover.
  3. enter. I can walk through open doors of opportunity! Hurray! There are open doors of opportunity. God is always opening doors for me. They are good and exciting doors. They are doors filled with miracles, dreams, hopes, provision, joy, peace, and all kinds of other good things! God gives, reveals, opens. I receive, discover, enter!

God prays

You have heard that it was said, “Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.” But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:43-45a NIV

God….

  1. loves his enemies. Don’t you love that about the most powerful Force in the universe? The most powerful force in the universe, that which moves everything, loves you – even when you hate it. Isn’t that amazing? The most powerful force in the universe, the giver and sustainer of all life, is inviting you into deeper love. This force begs you to make choices that are kind, invites you to make choices that are life-giving, and encourages you to overflow with joy. Aren’t you glad that we do not need to remain enemies of God? Because while we were still God’s enemies, Christ died for us! Hurray!!!
  2. prays for those who persecute him. What? God prays? Well, Jesus prays and the Spirit prays; so yes, I reckon God prays! Isn’t prayer simply communication with God? Isn’t God always communicating with God?
  3. is in heaven. I used to think that meant God was in some far away and distant place. Now I realize that that means God is right here…. in the unseen world that surrounds me.

Therefore I…

  1. can love my enemies. Just as God is constantly inviting his enemies to embrace truth and love, so I can do the same. I can do good for those who are not doing good to me.
  2. pray for those who want my ruin and work against my prosperity. I think especially of those who create ceilings and stained-glass ceilings for women. I can and will pray for their freedom.
  3. am surrounded by God. I get to dance in his loving embrace every day. Hurray!
