Casa Hogar Alegre
Many miles from my cozy studio apartment two miles from NYC is a place that is far different than my surroundings. There children play and love their dozens of “siblings” with wild abandon. There I have had a most beautiful time with mi hermanos y hermanas. Those wonderful children think we are related because we both believe in Jesus. I guess they’re right!
Casa Hogar Alegre is an orphanage in Tuxtla Gutierrez in Chiapas, Mexico. Chiapas is the poorest, southern-most state in Mexico. It borders Guatemala. The orphanage was founded by Mama Liz in 1993. It all started when she began to take orphaned and abandoned children into her home. Eventually it became an orphanage, and the number of children grew to nearly a hundred. Casa Hogar exists almost entirely from donations, as it is a private orphanage and is not run by the Mexican government.
You will be blessed when you give to the orphanage above and beyond what you will give to them through supporting me (as I support them). These children are precious children of God. In speaking to the Corinthians about giving abundantly, the Apostle Paul quotes Psalm 112:9,
“They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor. Their righteousness endures forever.”
How we care for and respond to the poor is very telling about the inner condition of our hearts. We have freely received the blessing of God, let us also give freely.

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
